Let start with prepping for Thanksgiving. The past few years Aaron and I have spent Thanksgiving in Dothan with his family. This year, since we have moved to what feels like a different universe, we asked his parents and brother to come out here and visit us.

We start grocery shopping two weeks before Thanksgiving in attempt to avoid the “holiday rush.” Little did we know the “holiday rush” was yet another novelty we left in Tally.

Saturday morning had become our designated grocery shipping time. The only people at the stores are the few senior citizens around here. And despite the fact that there are never that many people at the store the lines never fail to take a lifetime. Except on Saturday mornings. So we get up, two weeks before Thanksgiving, on Saturday morning. Go to the store only to find there were no more, possibly less, people than on an average Saturday. Great, we are beating the “holiday rush”. We begin looking for a turkey and after a while we start to think that not only have we beat the rush we also beat the turkeys. Finally, after grabbing several random items we didn’t need we find the turkeys, all 25 of them.

Fast forward a week:

It is now one week before Thanksgiving. We still have a few things to get for the week. Friday night Aaron and I decide to run to Walmart for a reason that is beyond our memory. Now, him being from South Alabama and me being from Orlando we were bracing ourselves for the worst Walmart shopping experience (although here every Walmart trip is the worst).
We pull into the parking to find the strangest thing, the last things we EVER expected… almost nothing. The parking lot was like a chess board at the end of the match when Aaron has stripped me to my King and a Pawn. Walking in the store continued the confusion. “Did we miss something?” “Is a tornado coming?” “Is the president in town?”

It doesn’t end there….

It is now the night before Thanksgiving, Aaron decided we were going to have Christmas with his family that night and we needed cookies. Cautiously we drive to the store and mentally prep ourselves. Since we have yet to the the “holiday rush” surely we are about to run straight into the fire…. or any other day at the store. REALLY?! This can’t be happening, surely this isn’t real life. We walk in and out with ease like any other of our early Saturday morning adventures.

One last time: THANKSGIVING DAY!

The worst thing that could ever happen on Thanksgiving day happened: I ran out of butter. Somehow with all my prepping and making lists weeks in advance and I manage to forget butter. As if we were determined to find the “holiday rush” Aaron and I run to the store one. last. time. We decide to go to the store closest to our house, which is also our least favorite store out here. It is awful! We walk in….look around….shocked, amazed, confused. I guess they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving out here… or they don’t eat for Thanksgiving? I am not really sure but Thanksgiving day is by far the best day for grocery shopping. I don’t really know what that is all about and I am not sure I ever will.

Finally, I will leave you with this last short story.

A few several months back, when I was still in Tally my co-workers and I were talking about not saying things because we didn’t want to “date ourselves”. One of them worked with high-school kids and apparently this phrase is foreign to them and they thoughts she had literally “dated” herself, who knew?

Now, I am in bizarre Kansas City. Me and two of my coworkers are closing down the office. The radio was still on and we were laughing about our boss’ music choices and how one day our kids will think we are crazy for the kind of music we like. I bring up the above conversation about “dating yourself”… the response that followed was more than a surprise. They both looked at me like a deer in headlights. I continued, thinking I didn’t explain the story clearly, silly me. As I start to feel dumb I ask “you do know the phrase ‘dating yourself,’ right?” Of course neither of them had heard the saying, not because of their age but because…..
